THE LAW OFFICE OF LYSETTE R. RIOS, A PROFESSIONAL CORPORATION

Injured Athlete?

Did you play for a California based team or sign your contract there?
You may be eligible to recover a workers' compensation settlement.

About Us

The Law Office of Lysette R. Rios specializes in the representation of retired athletes who played in California.

Specifically, any athlete who played in California or signed a contract in California is eligible to receive a workers’ compensation settlement for their injuries. This is not limited to specific traumatic injuries; the State of California recognizes the “wear and tear” each player sustains throughout their career.

When we take a case, we make sure each client understands their rights and options moving forward. Sometimes, there are multiple claim(s) an athlete can pursue that results in different forms of compensation and/or future medical benefits.

Our firm recognizes when the players’ career is over, they are left with various issues throughout their body, including but not limited to: orthopedic complaints to the neck, back, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles; neurological issues due to the repetitive head trauma; high blood pressure and/or heart issues; dental issues and/or missing teeth; psychological issues such as depression and/or anxiety; and last but not least – trouble sleeping and performing regular daily activities.

Ultimately, we will speak with each retired athlete and their family to determine what the best path forward is; Specifically, what doctors they need to see and how to best compensate them for their injuries.

FAQ

Please consider the following questions & answers regarding the claim process.

All retired athletes who sustained injury while playing and either: (1) played for a California team; or (2) verbally agreed and/or signed a California contract.

You will likely have to travel to Southern California for doctor appointments. Specifically, in order to determine the true value of your claim, most players will be required to see an orthopedic physician; and, depending on your symptoms, you may see specialists in other areas such as neurology, internal medicine, dentistry and/or psychology.

Every player’s recovery will be different depending on the years played, the injuries sustained, who the insurance company is handling their claim and the true value of the claim. Some players receive lump-sum settlements for disability and medical care, while others receive settlement(s) and a provision for future medical care.

There is no cost to you until we get a settlement and/or Award. All cases are taken on a contingency basis, wherein your recovery will be deducted by 15-18% for attorney fees.

If you are just now learning of your right to file a claim, you can still file, no matter how long ago it is that you played. Our clients range in ages from 20 – 85 years old.
